A new Road Safety Action Plan for Greater Bendigo will set out the actions required to make improvements to road safety and guide the implementation of road safety activities and improvements within Greater Bendigo for a five-year period. It will succeed the City of Greater Bendigo's Road Safety Plan developed in 2007.

It is also a requirement of the Victorian Government to align with the State’s recently adopted Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030.

The strategy will identify priorities that work towards zero fatalities and a decrease in all crash injuries by focusing on the following principles:

• Safer roads through engineering and infrastructure
• Safer speeds by creating a culture where the community regards speeding as unacceptable as drink driving
• Safer people through a shared responsibility for the safety of all road users – cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists & drivers
• Safer shared paths and footpaths.

The City of Greater Bendigo is responsible for looking after over 1,500km of sealed roads and 1,400km of unsealed (gravel) roads.

The City also maintains other road infrastructure:

• 910km of footpaths including bike paths and paths within reserves)
• Over 9,500 street lights
• 306 bridges
• 1,238km of kerb and channel
• 1,067km of underground drains
• 48,243 drainage pits
• Over 100,000 nature strip trees

Between 2014 and up to the end of 2019 a total of 1393 crashes occurred within Greater Bendigo including 385 serious injury crashes and 29 fatal crashes.

The Road Safety Action Plan will:

• outline key actions that meet the overarching priority goals outlined in the Road Safety Strategy
• assist both the City and Regional Roads Victoria to apply for State and Federal funding for road safety and infrastructure improvement projects
• provide input into prioritisation of Capital Works Programs by highlighting areas where new treatments should be installed.

The new plan will inform the necessary actions required to make improvements to road safety and guide the implementation of road safety activities within Greater Bendigo for a five-year period. It will also align with other existing Greater Bendigo policies and strategies.
